With the election of President Obama in 2008, it has been said that the US is now a post-racial society...a society in which race doesn't matter. Now, nobody likes to don rose-colored glasses more than I. I love 'em. I love seeing the good in all...even when there is just a smidgen. I'd rather see the good than the ugly. However, as I've matured, I realize that there is a time to take them off and see and deal with the reality of every situation. As much as I'd like to believe that America is even moving towards a post-racial society, the facts just say it ain't so.
Latest case in point: Recent headlines about Kelly Williams-Bolar who was convicted of a felony for using her father's address to claim residency status that would allow her children to attend a higher-performing suburban school...a school where 72% of students are white, 15% are black, 6% are Asian/Island Pacific and 1% Hispanic and Native American, respectively. Some of us have been outraged about it.
While this is a great injustice and a travesty that rightfully deserves the national attention that it is receiving, I want to bring your attention to yet another mother, who, right here in my backyard, in the Upper Darby School District, experienced a much worse fate. A fate that left two of her “model citizen” children with a felony rap that still follows them, often times aiding an employer to reject them for employment.
